Olympijsk\u00e9 mest\u00e1 a Eur\u00f3pske hlavn\u00e9 mest\u00e1 kult\u00fary (EHMK) maj\u00fa podobn\u00fd cie\u013e: vytvori\u0165 dielo, ktor\u00e9 pre\u017eije samotn\u00e9 podujatie. Zatia\u013e \u010do olympijsk\u00e9 mest\u00e1 sa s\u00fastre\u010fuj\u00fa na \u0161portovcov, EHMK sa zameriavaj\u00fa na umelcov, kult\u00farne zariadenia a kult\u00farno-spolo\u010densk\u00e9 podujatia. Udelenie prest\u00ed\u017eneho titulu EHMK 2013<\/strong> Ko\u0161iciam ur\u00fdchlilo vytvorenie novej kult\u00farnej infra\u0161trukt\u00fary a projekt pridal \u010fal\u0161\u00ed rozmer k u\u017e aj tak bohatej ponuke mesta. Okrem in\u00e9ho ju obohatili budovy prestavan\u00e9 a prisp\u00f4soben\u00e9 ich nov\u00fdm funkci\u00e1m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KULTURPARK<\/h3>\n

Kulturpark<\/strong>, b\u00fdval\u00e9 kas\u00e1rne rak\u00fasko-uhorskej arm\u00e1dy z 19. storo\u010dia, sa po rekon\u0161trukcii ukon\u010denej v roku 2012 stali viac\u00fa\u010delov\u00fdm kult\u00farnym priestorom. M\u00fary okolo kas\u00e1rn\u00ed zb\u00farali, \u010d\u00edm vznikol otvoren\u00fd mestsk\u00fd priestor na podujatia; tie sa v\u0161ak v\u00e4\u010d\u0161inou musia skon\u010di\u0165 do 22.00, aby neru\u0161ili obyvate\u013eov v bl\u00edzkom okol\u00ed. Hist\u00f3ria hrala rolu aj pri pomenovan\u00ed 22 objektov Kulturparku. Ich jednotliv\u00e9 n\u00e1zvy s\u00fa heslami pou\u017e\u00edvan\u00fdmi pri hl\u00e1skovan\u00ed vo vojenskej abecede. Najv\u00e4\u010d\u0161ia budova, Alfa, je srdcom are\u00e1lu. V jej s\u00e1lach a gal\u00e9rii sa konaj\u00fa koncerty, v\u00fdstavy, predn\u00e1\u0161ky a in\u00e9 spolo\u010densk\u00e9 podujatia. B\u00fdval\u00fd sklad nesie meno Bravo, je natret\u00fd na bielo a t\u00fdm n\u00faka siln\u00e9 kontrastn\u00e9 prostredie pre pr\u00e1ce reziden\u010dn\u00fdch v\u00fdtvarn\u00edkov. \u010cierno-biela architekt\u00fara so siv\u00fdmi prvkami bola premyslene navrhnut\u00e1 tak, aby nekonkurovala umeniu a povzbudzovala umelcov vnies\u0165 do nej farbu.<\/p>\n

De\u0165om je ur\u010den\u00e1 budova Charlie so Steel Parkom<\/strong>, spolo\u010dn\u00fdm projektom U.S. Steel Ko\u0161ice, Technickej univerzity Ko\u0161ice, Univerzity P. J. \u0160af\u00e1rika a Slovenskej akad\u00e9mie vied. V\u00fdstava pon\u00faka vy\u0161e 50 expon\u00e1tov, ktor\u00e9 rozpr\u00e1vaj\u00fa dejiny ocele v interakt\u00edvnom prostred\u00ed prijate\u013enom pre deti.<\/p>\n

\u201e\u013dudia s\u00fa zvedav\u00ed na nov\u00fd priestor,\u201c hovor\u00ed Adela Mi\u017e\u00edkov\u00e1, medi\u00e1lna konzultantka projektu a dod\u00e1va, \u017ee pr\u00e1ve samotn\u00fd priestor rob\u00ed projektu reklamu. A niet divu \u2013 zvonku i zvn\u00fatra sa n\u00e1jde \u010dosi zauj\u00edmav\u00e9 aj pre t\u00fdch naj\u013eahostajnej\u0161\u00edch. Popri troch spom\u00ednan\u00fdch budov\u00e1ch sa ostatn\u00e9 men\u0161ie pavil\u00f3ny daj\u00fa rozdeli\u0165 na dva typy: presklenn\u00e9, kde vidno dovn\u00fatra a pavil\u00f3ny so zrkadlovou fas\u00e1dou. S\u00fa tu aj dreven\u00e9 p\u00f3di\u00e1 pripom\u00ednaj\u00face Speakers\u2019 Corner (re\u010dn\u00edcky k\u00fatik) v lond\u00fdnskom Hyde Parku, kam sa \u013eudia m\u00f4\u017eu postavi\u0165 a spieva\u0165, hra\u0165 alebo debatova\u0165. Pri verejne organizovan\u00fdch podujatiach s\u00fa p\u00f3di\u00e1 ozvu\u010den\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HALA UMENIA<\/h3>\n

\u010eal\u0161\u00ed v\u00fdstavn\u00fd priestor preroben\u00fd z budovy s p\u00f4vodne in\u00fdm \u00fa\u010delom, s \u00fazkym prepojen\u00edm na Kulturpark, je Hala umenia (Kunsthalle)<\/strong>, p\u00f4vodne star\u00e1 mestsk\u00e1 plav\u00e1re\u0148 postaven\u00e1 v rokoch 1957 - 1962 a zatvoren\u00e1 v roku 1992. Budova v slohu neskorej moderny bola znovuotvoren\u00e1 v roku 2013 ako priestor na v\u00fdstavy, konferencie a koncerty. B\u00fdval\u00fd baz\u00e9n je tie\u017e v\u00fdstavn\u00fdm priestorom. Ak si to vy\u017eaduje predstava vystavovate\u013eov, m\u00f4\u017ee by\u0165 napusten\u00fd vodou do v\u00fd\u0161ky 25 cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jedn\u00fdm z najinovat\u00edvnej\u0161\u00edch projektov spojen\u00fdch s EHMK bola premena zastaran\u00fdch v\u00fdmenn\u00edkov tepla (SPOTs<\/strong>) na kult\u00farne centr\u00e1 pre obyvate\u013eov na s\u00eddlisk\u00e1ch. Hlavn\u00fd z\u00e1mer je, aby si sami obyvatelia, za pomoci t\u00edmov SPOTs, prisvojili tieto miesta a pri\u0161li s vlastn\u00fdmi n\u00e1padmi na kult\u00farne vyu\u017eitie. Ka\u017ed\u00fd v\u00fdmenn\u00edk m\u00e1 svoju hlavn\u00fa t\u00e9mu: jeden hudbu a hudobn\u00e9 workshopy, \u010fal\u0161\u00ed v\u00fdstavu zbierok r\u00f4znych predmetov patriacich obyvate\u013eom. Dvojmesa\u010dn\u00edk Pulz informuje o najnov\u0161\u00edch projektoch.<\/p>\n

Toto mal\u00e9, komorn\u00e9 m\u00fazeum vyvol\u00e1va dojem, akoby n\u00e1v\u0161tevn\u00edk pri\u0161iel k niekomu domov. Vojtech L\u00f6ffler (1906 - 1990) bol miestny soch\u00e1r a so \u017eenou darovali jeho diela aj zbierky mestu. K st\u00e1lym expon\u00e1tom patria jeho sochy a memorab\u00edlie, ako aj zbierka autoportr\u00e9tov L\u00f6fflerov\u00fdch priate\u013eov, ktor\u00ed boli v\u00fdznamn\u00fdmi ko\u0161ick\u00fdmi umelcami 20. storo\u010dia. Pre L\u00f6fflera, ktor\u00fd sa neuspokojil s vystavovan\u00edm len vlastn\u00fdch diel a zbierok, bolo d\u00f4le\u017eit\u00e9 pom\u00e1ha\u0165 mlad\u00fdm umelcom. Pr\u00edzemie m\u00fazea im poskytuje ateli\u00e9rov\u00fd priestor na tvorbu a miesto na vystavovanie pr\u00e1c.<\/p>\n

Najv\u00e4\u010d\u0161iou gal\u00e9riou v meste je V\u00fdchodoslovensk\u00e1 gal\u00e9ria<\/strong> so 6 400 umeleck\u00fdmi dielami, ktor\u00e1 sa \u0161pecializuje na v\u00fdchodoslovensk\u00e9 umenie 19. a\u017e 20. storo\u010dia a z\u00e1rove\u0148 poskytuje preh\u013ead o slovenskom umen\u00ed minul\u00e9ho storo\u010dia.<\/p>\n

Fan\u00fa\u0161ikom vedy sa bude p\u00e1\u010di\u0165 Slovensk\u00e9 technick\u00e9 m\u00fazeum<\/strong>, zameran\u00e9 na dejiny hutn\u00edctva, stroj\u00e1rstva, zememera\u010dstva a kartografie. Planet\u00e1rium a teleskop vystaven\u00e9 na najvy\u0161\u0161om poschod\u00ed poskytuj\u00fa z\u00e1bavu nielen pre deti, rovnako ako miestnos\u0165 s interakt\u00edvnymi fyzik\u00e1lnymi pokusmi.<\/p>\n

Milovn\u00edci z\u00e1\u017eitkov pod \u0161\u00edrym nebom by mali nav\u0161t\u00edvi\u0165 M\u00fazeum letectva<\/strong>, ktor\u00e9 je s\u00fa\u010das\u0165ou Slovensk\u00e9ho technick\u00e9ho m\u00fazea. Na pozemku ko\u0161ick\u00e9ho letiska s\u00fa v hang\u00e1roch vystaven\u00e9 historick\u00e9 lietadl\u00e1 z cel\u00e9ho sveta a m\u00fazeum vzniklo do zna\u010dnej miery z iniciat\u00edvy b\u00fdval\u00e9ho slovensk\u00e9ho prezidenta Rudolfa Schustera. E\u0161te ako prezident \u017eiadal Schuster hlavy \u0161t\u00e1tov, ktor\u00e9 nav\u0161t\u00edvil, aby mu darovali star\u00e9 lietadlo. Jeho podpora m\u00fazea zjavne st\u00e1le trv\u00e1, ke\u010f\u017ee od ma\u010farsk\u00e9ho premi\u00e9ra Viktora Orb\u00e1na pr\u00e1ve ned\u00e1vno dostal k 80. narodenin\u00e1m dopravn\u00e9 lietadlo 11-18 sovietskej v\u00fdroby. A napokon, hoci nem\u00e1 na M\u00fazeum Madame Tussauds, v 45 metrov vysokej Urbanovej ve\u017ei s\u00eddli najv\u00e4\u010d\u0161ie m\u00fazeum voskov\u00fdch figur\u00edn<\/strong> na Slovensku, so \u0161tyrmi poschodiami svetozn\u00e1mych historick\u00fdch post\u00e1v p\u00f4vodom z v\u00fdchodn\u00e9ho Slovenska. Sv. Urban je patr\u00f3nom vin\u00e1rov a ve\u017ea stoj\u00ed hne\u010f ved\u013ea gotick\u00e9ho D\u00f3mu sv. Olympic host cities and European Capital of Culture (ECoC) cities have a similar goal: to build a foundation and create a legacy that outlasts the events themselves. While an Olympic host city concentrates on athletes and venues, an ECoC concentrates on artists and venues. Ko\u0161ice\u2019s designation as the 2013 ECoC<\/strong> accelerated the creation of a lasting cultural infrastructure to nurture art, and its projects add another layer to the city\u2019s already rich cultural offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE KULTURPARK<\/h3>\n

Ko\u0161ice\u2019s newest cultural venues are mostly buildings repurposed with the EU funds coming along with the ECoC designation. The Kulturpark<\/strong>, a former 19th century Hungarian army barracks reconstructed in 2012, has become a multi-purpose cultural space for art exhibitions, theatre productions, and music concerts. The developers committed to an underground 114-space parking lot to keep the area free from congestion. The walls surrounding the barracks were torn down creating an urban space. However, most events must finish by 22:00 (10pm), so as not to disturb nearby residents. Mindful of its history, the buildings were renamed with the military alphabet. For instance, the Alpha Building\u2019s black, white and gray background was thoughtfully designed to not compete with the art and to encourage the artists to bring in the colour to the space. A former stable retains its form with the stalls painted white to give a stark contrast for rotating contemporary art exhibits.<\/p>\n

For children, there is a building housing Steelpark<\/strong>, a joint project between U.S. Steel Ko\u0161ice and three educational and scientific institutions - Technical University in Ko\u0161ice, University of P. J. \u0160af\u00e1rik and the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The exhibition offers more than 50 exhibits telling the story of steel in a kid-friendly environment. Kulturpark is catching on.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople are curious about the new space,\u201d said Adela Mi\u017e\u00edkov\u00e1, a media consultant for the project. \u201cThe new space is doing the marketing for us.\u201d And no wonder, from the inside to the outside, there is something to engage even the most casual passerby. Outside there are two types of pavilions: those made of glass where you can see inside, or those made of mirrors where you can see your reflection. There are also wooden stages, \u00e0 la London\u2019s Hyde Park Speakers\u2019 Corner, where people can get up and sing, perform or discuss. The stages are wired for performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE KUNSTHALLE<\/h3>\n

Another repurposed art exhibition space with close ties to the Kulturpark is the Kunsthalle<\/strong>, originally a municipal swimming pool built in 1957-1962 and closed in 1992. Constructed in post-war modernism style, the building was reopened in 2013 as a venue for art exhibitions, conferences and concerts. The former swimming pool now has 25 cm of water for shows if needed, and it can be drained to house additional art exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPOTS<\/h3>\n

One of the most innovative projects emanating from the ECoC was to transform outdated heat exchange stations (SPOTs<\/strong>) into neighbourhood cultural centres. These SPOTs are located in the high-rise apartment complexes that spread out from the city\u2019s historic centre into the neighbourhoods where most people live. The idea is for the residents themselves, with the help of the SPOTs team, to claim these areas as their own and to devise their own ideas for cultural exhibits. For instance, each SPOT has a main topic; one is music and musical workshops, another has an exhibition of residents\u2019 collections of various things. A bi-monthly newsletter (Pulz) gives details on the latest projects.<\/p>\n

S\u00c1NDOR M\u00c1RAI<\/h3>\n

Literature lovers will find the museum of S\u00e1ndor M\u00e1rai<\/strong> (1900-1989), Ko\u0161ice\u2019s best known native novelist, of interest. M\u00e1rai set many of his works in his city of his childhood. During his visit to Ko\u0161ice, the late Archduke Otto von Habsburg, son of the last Austro-Hungarian emperor, said that he is familiar with the city thanks to M\u00e1rai\u2019s books. Visitors can view a 50-minute documentary of his life in English as well as view furniture, paintings, and artefacts from his long life. Not far away, on M\u00e4siarska street, is a sculpture of M\u00e1rai by P\u00e9ter G\u00e1sp\u00e1r. It shows a seated M\u00e1rai opposite an empty chair that invites one to sit in and perhaps imagine a conversation with the famed author. Children flock to this sculpture giving their parents an endearing photo opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES<\/h3>\n

Although the infusion of EU funds transformed some of the older buildings in Ko\u0161ice into hipper cultural spaces, there are plenty of museums and galleries that remain the backbone of the cultural scene predating the ECoC designation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ferdinand I\u2018s equestrian medal (1541) is part of the Ko\u0161ice Gold Treasury<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

The famed Ko\u0161ice Gold Treasure<\/strong>, which returned to the city in September 2013 after being on tour for five years, is now back at the Eastern Slovak Museum<\/strong> and worth seeing. The discovery of 2,920 gold coins, three medals, a Renaissance chain and a copper box was one of the largest coin finds in Europe\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Although founded in 1993, the elegant, two-story L\u00f6ffler Museum<\/strong> appears to embody much of the generosity of spirit and importance of a cultural life that is part and parcel of the ECoC ethos. This small and intimate museum has the feel of being in someone\u2019s house. Vojtech L\u00f6ffler (1906-1990) was a local sculptor, and he and his wife donated the museum to the town. Permanent exhibits include L\u00f6ffler\u2019s sculptures and memorabilia as well as his collection of the self- portraits created by his friends who were important 20th century Ko\u0161ice artists. Not content with exhibiting only his own work and collections, it was important for L\u00f6ffler to help young artists. The ground floor supports young artists by giving them studio space to work in and a place to exhibit their work.<\/p>\n

The Eastern Slovak Gallery<\/strong> is the city\u2019s largest, with 6,400 works of art. It focuses on 19th and 20th-century art from eastern Slovakia and provides an overview of 20th-century Slovak art.<\/p>\n

More science-minded visitors will enjoy the Slovak Technical Museum<\/strong> with its emphasis on the history of metallurgy, mechanical engineering, surveying and cartography. A planetarium and telescope exhibit on the top floor provides fun for the kids, as does a room offering hands-on physics experiments.<\/p>\n

Those wishing for an outdoor experience should visit the Museum of Aviation<\/strong> that is part of the Slovak Technical Museum. On the grounds of the Ko\u0161ice Airport, this museum exhibits historical aircraft from all over the world in airplane hangars. It was largely created through the efforts of Slovakia\u2019s former president Rudolf Schuster. He is not only a former mayor of Ko\u0161ice but also an aviation enthusiast. While president, Schuster would ask the heads of states of countries he visited for the gift of an old airplane. His support of the museum is apparently still ongoing as he just received a Soviet-made 11-18 transport plane from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n as a gift for his 80th birthday. There is also a display of vintage cars in the last hangar.<\/p>\n
