Evangelical Church in Štítnik

Gothic church in Štítnik hides the most beautiful wall paintings.

We are in the second half of the 17th century and Baroque is flourishing in Europe. In the evangelical church in Štítnik close to Košice the parish priest comes to a bronze baptistry where already there are unpatient parents waiting with their babies that are soon to be baptized by the priest. While representatives of prominent guilds of Štítnik are sitting on benches, less wealthy inhabitants are standing. Maybe this scenario will cross your mind when you visit the fascinating Gothic church in Štítnik with beautiful stellar and reticular vaults and with the most ancient organ in Slovakia. An authentic atmosphere is underlined by stunning wall paintings on the surface of more than 180 square metres while some Gothic frescos are only from the end of the 14th century. The interior of the church is embellished by Renaissance-Baroque benches that used to belong to famous guilds of Štítnik and you can also find here the aforementioned Gothic baptistry from 1454!
