Figova jama pri Sans Souci

The Fig Tree refers to the rich history of the Sans Souci summer residence, which is closely connected with aristocratic cultivation and the effort to nurture not only plants, but also virtues, culture, and the arts. The authors drew inspiration from an ancient gardening tradition and planted the fig tree in a pit lined with local stone, providing natural protection and creating suitable conditions for its growth.

However, the fig pit is not merely a reference to the past. It is a contemporary artwork that encourages cooperation, care, and sharing, while also inviting reflection on climate change and humanity’s relationship with the environment. Through the cultivation of a traditionally southern plant in local conditions, the installation highlights the changing climate and the adaptability of both nature and people.

The artwork can be found within the grounds of the Sans Souci summer residence, near the Millennium Chapel. It is located approximately two kilometres along a hiking trail from the village of Iliašovce and about four kilometres from the village of Smižany.
