Paddling the Bodrog
Water tourism, an active form of relaxation in nature, is gaining more and more popularity on the Bodrog River every year.
Bodrog, a river without a spring, is formed by the confluence of the Ondava and Latorica rivers. On the Slovak side of the border, it stretches for 15 km before continuing into Hungary. In the Košice Region, it flows through the Medzibodrožie protected bird area and drains the entire Eastern Slovak Lowland.
Thanks to kayak, canoe, and paddleboard rentals, paddlers can fully enjoy the river’s treasures. The river’s character is calm here, suitable even for less experienced paddlers, who have several options to enjoy the ride. The first is to float downstream and disembark in the village of Borša – a trip that takes just under two hours.
More experienced paddlers who start at the confluence of the Latorica and Ondava rivers can use the stop in Ladmovce as a rest point. Here, they can refresh themselves at a healing spring and learn interesting facts about protected plants and animals living in the KAŠVAR nature reserve.
Those who are up for a longer adventure can continue all the way to Hungary, where the river landscape changes from an “Amazon-like” environment to a more open one, with small sandy beaches along its banks.
Tourists can rent canoes and paddleboards during the season from May until the end of September.
