Kamenný most v Gelnici
The stone bridge in Gelnica is an important national cultural monument and belongs among the most valuable technical and historical structures in the town. Thanks to its preserved form and harmonious integration into the landscape, it serves not only as a transport structure but also as an important symbol of the region’s history. The bridge continues to impress with its architectural beauty and craftsmanship.
The stone bridge was built between 1837 and 1845. It consists of two elegant semicircular arches, with the larger one spanning the Hnilec River. The smaller arch helps to divert water during high flows, increasing the bridge’s resistance to floods. The structure, made of quarry stone, was designed to be strong, stable, and aesthetically pleasing.
The bridge is an example of high-quality 19th-century stonemasonry. The materials and construction method ensured its long-term durability, allowing it to survive to the present day. Its technical design reflects a high level of engineering for its time, combining functionality with aesthetics.
A stone plaque on the bridge bears the year 1837 and the monogram G.B., which refers to the historical name of Gelnica – Golnicz Bánya. This detail recalls the mining history of the town and its importance during the Austro-Hungarian period. In 1974, the bridge underwent extensive reconstruction works that ensured its stability and preservation for future generations.
Today, the stone bridge in Gelnica is accessible only to pedestrians and cyclists, making it a popular place for walks and relaxation. It also offers a beautiful view of the Hnilec River and surrounding landscape, making it one of the most visited locations in the town.
