Bird Trail Ižkovce

An inconspicuous yet charming locality near the village of Ižkovce offers a short and easy trail ideal for peaceful birdwatching in the natural wetland environment. The route follows field paths along an educational trail from Ižkovce towards the beginning of the village of Beša. It is perfect for a relaxing walk in nature.

At the start of the trail lies the Pohola marsh, surrounded by shrubs, reeds, and open water. A simple wooden bench with a shelter extends to its edge, allowing visitors to observe wetland life without disturbing it. In the village of Ižkovce, there is also a basic shelter for rest. The trail continues past sandy fields and along another wetland area – the Halov marsh.

The site is particularly attractive for bird lovers. During the nesting season, visitors can observe water birds such as the little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis), Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), and mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). The marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus) nests here regularly, while reed warblers and grasshopper warblers sing in the reeds. Rare species such as the great bittern (Botaurus stellaris) or ferruginous duck (Aythya nyroca) may also be spotted.

During spring and autumn migration, various duck species stop here, including gadwall, garganey, northern shoveler, and Eurasian wigeon. When water levels are lower, waders can also be observed.

Educational panels complement the trail and explain the local wetland ecosystem. The location is ideal for those seeking peace, silence, and authentic contact with nature—whether for a short walk or as a stop on a journey of discovering birdlife.
