Rankovské skaly
Rankovské skaly are part of the Slanské vrchy mountain range and belong to important natural areas with the highest level of protection. These striking volcanic rock formations were created by ancient volcanic activity and rise above the surrounding deciduous forests. At an elevation of approximately 790 m above sea level, they form a dominant landscape feature visible from several nearby villages and serve as a natural viewpoint over the region.
The area is also significant in terms of nature conservation, as it provides a habitat for several protected species. Among the most valuable are rare bird species, especially birds of prey, including endangered falcons that find suitable nesting conditions here. This biodiversity is the reason for strict protection and minimal human impact on the environment.
From the summit of Rankovské skaly, visitors can enjoy impressive panoramic views of the Slanské vrchy, Košice Basin, and part of the Slovak Ore Mountains. Under ideal conditions, it is possible to see the distant peaks of the High Tatras. The site is therefore popular among hikers, photographers, and nature lovers seeking peace and scenery free from urban disturbance.
The hiking trail starts in the village of Herľany, home to a well-known natural geyser. From there, a marked green trail leads through forest terrain up to the summit. The route is pleasant and gradually reveals wider and wider views as the elevation increases.
At the top, there is a rest area with benches, a table, and a fireplace in the shade of trees. Visitors can relax, have a snack, or enjoy a picnic, while respecting nature protection rules. Rankovské skaly combine natural beauty, geological uniqueness, and peaceful hiking conditions, making it one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the region.
