Three greats of Slovakia from Gemer

Do you know what Pavol Jozef Šafárik, Jur Hronec, and Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský have in common? Besides being important figures in Slovak history, they also share the same birthplace – Gemer.

Along a 5-kilometer educational trail, you can walk or cycle and visit the memorial room of Jur Hronec in his native house in Gočovo, the memorial house of Pavol Jozef Šafárik in his birthplace in Kobeliarovo, and finally the memorial room in the birthplace of Pavol Emanuel Dobšinský in Slavošovce.

The birthplace of the famous collector of fairy tales is located in the center of Slavošovce. The modest house is marked only by a plaque, yet inside it hides interesting treasures connected to his childhood and literary work. The people of Slavošovce highly value their native son and have even built a “fairy-tale house” on the edge of the forest in his honor.

Another well-known figure from Gemer is the important mathematician Jur Hronec. His birthplace is easy to recognize thanks to its striking blue color. Discover the place where this brilliant mathematical mind was born, a man who founded several universities.

The journey ends with Pavol Jozef Šafárik, or rather with his birthplace in Kobeliarovo. The former parish house was also his childhood home. Today, it contains an exhibition presenting his birthplace, family background, student years, and his professional life in Bratislava, Novi Sad, and Prague, where his scientific work reached its peak.
