Volské jazero pri obci Somotor

Volské Lake, located near the village of Somotor, has an area of 23 hectares. It is a river lake with a total length of 0.75 km and a maximum width of up to 120 metres. It lies northeast of Somotor and belongs to the system of abandoned river meanders of the Bodrog River.

The lake was formed due to river erosion in alluvial landscapes and the continuous shifting of the Bodrog River’s channel. This process created a former river bend that eventually became isolated. A meander is a characteristic curve of a river formed by lateral erosion.

A dead or oxbow lake is a section of a watercourse that was once part of a river but gradually became completely separated from it. The lake has both surface inflow and outflow, and precipitation exceeds evaporation. It is known for its extremely rich animal and plant communities.

The flora and fauna around the lake are typical of floodplain forests and represent a valuable example of today’s rare wetland ecosystems in the Medzibodrožie region. The area hosts a large number of insects such as damselflies, dragonflies, water striders, and also spiders.

This site is an important breeding ground for water and semi-aquatic birds. More than 30 bird species nest here, and around 100 species can be observed in total. Notable species include the Eurasian spoonbill, black-winged stilt, great egret, little egret, marsh harrier, great crested grebe, tufted duck, mallard, and purple heron.

The lake also contains various fish species, including carp, grass carp, pike, zander, catfish, sturgeon, and bream.
