Gelnica Ice Rink
The Ice Rink in Gelnica is an important sports and social venue of the town, closely linked to a long tradition of ice sports. The modern history of ice hockey in Gelnica began in the mid-1970s, when a group of local enthusiasts led by Peter Bindas initiated the construction of an ice rink with an artificially refrigerated ice surface. The first skating took place in November 1985 on natural ice, already within the premises of the newly built rink.
A milestone came on November 12, 1986, when the artificial ice surface was officially put into operation. This event gave a strong impulse to the development of hockey and systematic youth training in Gelnica. Since 1993, the rink has hosted the Peter Bindas Memorial – the oldest international junior ice hockey tournament in Slovakia, which continues to hold an important position in youth hockey.
Today, the ice rink serves not only ice hockey clubs but also the general public for recreational skating. It is a popular place for active leisure for families with children, athletes, and visitors to the town during the winter season.
