Dreveník Rock City
Where hell meets paradise
Nature, hiking, rock formations, caves, gorges, history and the artistry of travertine – you can discover all of this in one place at Dreveník Rock City. Slovakia’s largest travertine area is one of the country’s unique natural treasures. Dreveník stretches for approximately two kilometres and is divided into two distinctive areas – Peklo (Hell) and Raj (Paradise). Peklo is a mysterious maze of narrow rocky passages with walls reaching up to 40 metres in height, while Raj offers a variety of rock towers and impressive scenery.
History enthusiasts will be fascinated by the remains of an ancient Slavic hillfort and traces of settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. Dreveník is also rich in fossils, rare plant species and medicinal herbs. Its travertine formations were created by mineral springs emerging along a tectonic fault. Three caves can also be found on its slopes, while travertine from the area has long been used as a building and decorative stone. Dreveník forms part of the natural and landscape setting of the UNESCO World Heritage site Levoča, Spiš Castle and the Associated Cultural Monuments.
From the summit plateau of Dreveník, visitors can enjoy beautiful views of the Hornád Basin, the Branisko Mountains, the Volovské Hills and the Levoča Mountains. Typical karst formations such as sinkholes and limestone pavements can also be seen here. The greatest attraction, however, is the spectacular view of majestic Spiš Castle. Nearby, it is also worth visiting the Church of the Holy Spirit in Žehra, renowned for its precious medieval wall paintings.
An approximately 4-kilometre marked hiking and educational trail leads through the nature reserve from Spišské Podhradie and Žehra. Dreveník can also be reached from the car park below Spiš Castle. Whether you are drawn by nature, history, adventure or magnificent views, Dreveník brings them all together in one remarkable place.
