Hradná jaskyňa

Castle Cave is located beneath the ruins of the medieval Sokoľ Castle on Hrádek Hill at an altitude of 545 meters above sea level, west of the village of Sokoľ in the Slovak Ore Mountains. The cave lies on the northeastern slope approximately 10 meters below the castle and is about 27 meters long. It is an interesting combined cavity formed partly by nature and partly by human activity. It is believed that in the past it served as a cellar or storage area for the castle.

Sokoľ Castle itself was probably built in the 13th century as a guard castle protecting the surrounding area and trade routes. Later, it became the property of the city of Košice, but it disappeared during the 15th century. To this day, remains of walls, a castle moat, and parts of the fortifications have been preserved on Hrádek Hill, reminding visitors of the castle’s former appearance.

Castle Cave has not only historical but also natural significance. During winter, it provides shelter for several species of bats that find suitable conditions there for hibernation. Therefore, the site is interesting not only for history enthusiasts but also for visitors interested in nature and caves.

Access to the cave leads from the village of Sokoľ along an educational trail that guides tourists through the forest to the castle ruins. The route is easy and offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. Today, the castle, cave, and surrounding area are maintained by the municipality of Sokoľ in cooperation with civic associations and volunteers dedicated to preserving and restoring this important historical site.
