Huta Etelka

Etelka ironworks in Nižná Slaná is one of the important technical monuments of the Gemer region and a significant evidence of the development of the iron industry in the 19th century. The blast furnace was built in 1867 by Count Emanuel Andrássy on the site of two older furnaces and was named after his mother, Etelka. During its period of greatest activity, between 1867 and 1907, the ironworks formed part of a large industrial complex that significantly contributed to the mining and processing of iron ore in the region.

From the original complex, only the blast furnace building has been preserved. The site is fenced off and not accessible to the public. Although it was used for various purposes in the past, it gradually fell into decay, which led to initiatives aimed at its protection and restoration. The goal is to restore it to a condition similar to its appearance around 1910 and preserve it as part of the industrial heritage of the Gemer region.

Today, Etelka can mainly be viewed from the outside, but it still remains a strong reminder of the historical mining and metallurgical tradition of the Nižná Slaná area.
