Kojšovská hoľa

Whether you are a tourist or a runner, make your way to the 49th parallel at Kojšovská hoľa. This is exactly where 49 peace pillars stand, symbolizing Slovakia’s position on the 49th parallel. Kojšovská hoľa is visited by tourists throughout the year. On the way to the summit, you will also find the popular mountain hut Erika, a memorial to the Slovak National Uprising (SNP), and a photo point #EndOfTheWorld.

The altitude, varied terrain, and especially the beautiful nature make this area ideal for recreation, sports, and relaxation. Hikers and cyclists can enjoy ridge walks and trips to nearby valleys and surrounding mountains. The important red-marked trail known as the Heroes of the SNP Trail passes along its southwestern slope. Kojšovská hoľa and its surrounding forests and meadows are rich in wild berries, mushrooms, blueberries, cranberries, wild strawberries, raspberries, and various medicinal and protected plants.

The mountain is a broad, grassy peak extending from the main ridge. About 100 hectares of its surface are covered with grassland. From the top, visitors can enjoy a stunning panoramic view of the High and Low Tatras, as well as the eastern part of Slovakia and nearby towns and villages such as Košice, Prešov, Margecany, Prakovce, and Gelnica.

In 1988, a meteorological station was built near the summit, operated by the Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute. Next to the triangulation point is a metal box with a summit logbook.

You can start your hike from the town of Gelnica, where you can also visit Turzovské Lake or the mining open-air museum. A hiking trail also leads from the village of Kojšov, which additionally offers a climbing wall. Nearby attractions include the Jasov Cave, the Medzev forge, and a planetarium.
