Neskororenesančný kaštieľ v obci Senné
The manor house in the village of Senné, located near the park and the Senianske rybníky National Nature Reserve, is one of the oldest manor houses in the Lower Zemplín region. It was built in the late Renaissance style in the first half of the 17th century on the foundations of an older 16th-century manor house (curia), originally owned by the Dobó noble family. In the 17th century, the manor house was rebuilt and later used by the noble families Véčey (Vécsey) and Stáraj (Sztáray) as an economic residence and hunting manor, where well-known bird hunts were held.
The manor house is a two-storey building with a rectangular floor plan and a characteristic three-storey tower. In the mid-18th century, the tower’s entrance portal was decorated with an artistically forged Rococo grille. In the 19th century, extensive modifications were carried out, during which all windows were enlarged and framed with decorative stucco surrounds. On the northern side of the building there is an attic room with two windows, while the interiors feature ribbed vaults, built-in cabinets, and Classicist stoves with relief decoration, installed at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
After 1945, the manor house was nationalized and used for various purposes, including as a kindergarten and primary school, as well as accommodation for SAD drivers and ornithologists. In the summer of 1978, the roof was significantly damaged during a storm, after which the building began to deteriorate. Since 2011, gradual restoration has been underway thanks to a new owner and the Foundation for the Restoration and Preservation of the Senné Manor House. Today, the manor serves as a symbolic gateway to the Senianske rybníky Protected Bird Area.
The surroundings of the manor house include a large landscaped park rich in wild birdlife. The manor is surrounded by remains of farm buildings and a simple wooden fence, while its thick walls (nearly one meter wide) once protected it from spring floods that regularly affected the Seniansky depression.
The new owner, who also manages several fishponds in the area, plans to transform the manor into a restaurant with accommodation in the future. A nature trail called “Through the Bird Paradise” passes through the estate, with a total length of about 17 km, offering visitors a unique experience of the local natural environment.
The manor house in Senné was listed as a national cultural monument on March 23, 1963 and is open to the public during various events organized in the village.
