Ružínsky viadukt
Ružín Viaduct is an impressive railway bridge in the Hornád Valley, located between the Malá Lodina station and the Ružín stop. This double-track electrified viaduct crosses the balancing reservoir of Malá Lodina, better known as the Ružín II water reservoir, and is the highest railway bridge in Slovakia, standing 40 meters above the water level.
The viaduct was built between 1952 and 1955 as part of the so-called Friendship Railway Line, which connected Čierna nad Tisou with Žilina. Today, it is part of the Žilina – Košice railway line, known as line number 180 in the timetable. This route is a key connection between eastern and western Slovakia.
The Ružín Viaduct is approximately 280 meters long. It is notable for its construction, as each track has a separate steel riveted structure with an upper deck. Each of these structures consists of four sections, each with a span of 69.3 meters. The structures are supported by concrete abutments and three pillars.
In the vicinity of the viaduct, there are also other technical attractions, such as the Ružín Tunnel and the Ružín passing loop. The bridge is a popular photography spot throughout the year due to its scenic location and technical significance. Built using old riveted construction technology, the Ružín Viaduct deserves protection and inclusion in the National Heritage Fund as an important technical monument of Slovakia.
