Obišovský hrad

Obišovce Castle is among the oldest and also smallest castles in Slovakia. It is located north of the village of Obišovce, above a bend of the Svinka River. The castle, also known as Zámčisko or Stráža, was founded in the 13th century on the remains of an older Slavic fortified settlement by nobles from the Aba family.

Although it was destroyed during the 15th-century period of castle destruction, its ruins still attract visitors today. They can admire the remains of walls, look into the ancient tower, or walk through the moat that once ran along the defensive earthworks. The castle area is freely accessible, making it suitable for family trips.

Archaeological research from 1961–1962 revealed that the medieval castle consisted of a single-storey residential palace with three rooms, a guardhouse, defensive ramparts, a drawbridge, a cistern, a main defensive tower, and fortifications. The moat around the castle was 2.5 meters deep, and access was provided by a wooden bridge. The outer wall, in places up to 2 meters thick, shows the layout of the castle complex, which is still visible in the remaining ruins.

Obišovce Castle is the first castle in Slovakia to be fully archaeologically researched, offering a unique insight into medieval defense systems and life in the region. The route to the site is easy and suitable even for families with children, although there are no food services on site. It is an excellent destination for an adventurous trip.
