Zlaté piesky pri Malých Trakanoch
In the southeasternmost corner of Slovakia, in the Trebišov District, lies the village of Malé Trakany, bordering Veľké Trakany and the town of Čierna nad Tisou, where the nearest railway stop is located. This region, where Slovakia meets Hungary and Ukraine, hides a small eastern gem – a sandy beach near floodplain forests, locally known as the “Golden Sands on the Tisa”.
The village’s location on the right bank of the Tisa River offers a wide range of recreational, tourist, and fishing opportunities. The Tisa, the second most water-rich river in Slovakia, flows through this area only in a short, approximately 6-kilometre section, forming the border with Hungary. Although the river is about 1,000 kilometres long in total, within Slovakia it has mainly symbolic significance, with the right bank belonging to Slovakia and the river reaching a width of around 100 metres here.
Near Malé Trakany, you can notice a protected area marked as the Tisa Alluvium. This section includes the river basin and its wetlands, which are considered globally significant. Parts of the alluvium are permanently flooded, forming marshes, fens, and peatlands that host rare plant and animal species. In Slovakia, there are 14 internationally important wetlands listed under the Ramsar Convention, and the Tisa wetlands are among them.
The Tisa River and its surroundings are rich in flora and fauna typical of floodplain forests and wetlands. The sandy beach near Malé Trakany, formed by deposited fine river sand, was a popular natural bathing spot in the 1990s. Locals still refer to it as the “Golden Sands on the Tisa”, and visitors can enjoy swimming and sunbathing there free of charge.
The river area is also well known for its rich fish population. Common species include the wels catfish, black bullhead, zander, asp, Danube roach, common roach, rudd, burbot, and common carp.
The village of Malé Trakany is also known for its traditional “Trakany slivovitz” (plum brandy). Locals still grow fruit in their gardens and have their mash distilled at the local distillery. This region, with its natural beauty and rich cultural traditions, is an ideal destination for those seeking peace and authenticity in the heart of nature.
