Ortodoxná synagóga v Pribeníku

The synagogue in the village of Pribeník is one of the small but architecturally valuable monuments of Jewish cultural heritage in eastern Slovakia, near the border with Hungary. It is a sensitively restored eclectic-style building that has preserved several of its original architectural elements. The façade is characterized by semi-circular windows, a prominent cornice, and a gable featuring the Star of David and the Tablets of Moses.

After the Second World War, the synagogue experienced a fate similar to many other rural synagogues in the region. Following the deportation of the Jewish population, it ceased to serve its original purpose and was used for many years as a storage facility, for example for grain or agricultural materials. Although this changed its condition, it also helped prevent its complete destruction.

A significant turning point came in 1996, when the building was transferred to the municipality of Pribeník. Efforts to restore it followed, culminating in reconstruction approximately ten years later. Thanks to this, the valuable historical building was preserved and restored to a dignified appearance.

Today, the synagogue serves as the Gallery of Nations, where various exhibitions and cultural events are regularly held. It thus functions as a bridge between history and contemporary culture and reminds visitors of the multicultural heritage of the region.
