Premonstratensian monastery in Jasov
The inconspicuous village of Jasov hides one of the most precious sacral monuments of Slovakia – the Premonstratensian Monastery. It is a Baroque complex of the Church of St. John the Baptist and the Premonstratensian monastery with a French-style monastery garden. The interior of the church is decorated, for example, with a collection of seven altars arranged in strict symmetry and magnificent frescoes by the renowned Baroque painter Johann Lucas Kracker. The monastery also houses one of the most significant libraries in Slovakia with approximately eighty thousand volumes of theological, philosophical, natural science, geographical, historical as well as fiction works, written mainly in Latin, Hungarian, and German. The Premonstratensian monastery complex is listed as a national cultural monument.
The Jasov Monastery is also an architectural symbol in the spirit of “tempus fugit”, as it was built to remind of the endless passage of time. The monastery has 365 windows (as days in a year), 12 large chimneys (as months in a year), and 4 entrances (symbolizing the seasons). These features can be best admired from Jasovská Rock, which also offers breathtaking views of the Volovské Hills with Kojšovská hoľa.
Visitors can experience the monastery’s atmosphere through guided tours of the Church of St. John the Baptist, the former archive, the library, Abraham’s Hall, the hunting salon, the garden, the convent, and current exhibitions.
Guided tours are available from May 16 to September 15, always from Tuesday to Saturday. An audio guide is also available in Slovak, English, Hungarian, Polish, German, and French.
