Rímskokatolícky kostol Návštevy Panny Márie v Trebišove

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Trebišov is one of the most significant Gothic monuments in Slovakia, with origins dating back to before 1404. Although it was influenced over time by various artistic and philosophical movements, it has preserved its Gothic character. The church consists of a main nave, to which side chapels were later attached. Inside, there are 63 fields of ribbed vaulting, decorated with various figurative and ornamental motifs.

The interior is enriched by several altars, wall paintings, and a triumphal arch with sculpted mascarons and consoles. The ceiling of the sanctuary depicts scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary, to whom the church is dedicated. The church was founded before 1404, when a newer Gothic structure replaced an earlier building on the same site. Until 1504, it served as a parish church, after which it came under the administration of the Pauline monks, who restored and modified it in 1696 and 1770.

The ceilings also feature beautiful illusionistic paintings from the late 18th century, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary and legendary episodes from the life of Saint Paul the Hermit. The decoration is complemented by two large paintings on the side walls of the nave: The Vision of Sobieski during the Siege of Vienna and Homage to Maria Theresa, both from 1777.

Throughout its history, the church underwent several repairs. In 1876 it was damaged by fire, after which it was restored thanks to Count Teodor Andrássy. Restoration works in 1933, led by Július Kern, focused on the repair of frescoes. Further repairs were carried out in 1968, although some techniques used during these works may complicate future restoration.

In the 1920s, after World War I, confiscated bells had to be replaced, so two new bells were purchased to complement the largest existing bell. The church was also structurally reinforced with iron tie rods and received a new tower roof with a new cross.

Inside the church are also many historical-artistic artifacts, including hanging paintings, a stone baptismal font, and a rare ceremonial chair made in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph I, decorated with gold and purple velvet. This “imperial throne” was donated to the church by Count Teodor Andrássy.

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is therefore not only a place of spiritual life but also an important cultural and historical monument, attracting visitors with its rich history and artistic value.
