Rotunda v Michalovciach

The remains of a stone rotunda with a circular nave and a horseshoe-shaped apse are located within the grounds of the Zemplín Museum on Kostolné Square in Michalovce. The structure was discovered and archaeologically investigated during the 1970s and represents one of the most important early Christian monuments in the Zemplín region. Its existence provides valuable evidence of the spread and establishment of Christianity in this part of present-day Slovakia.

The exact date of the rotunda's construction remains uncertain. Scholars have proposed a period ranging from the 9th to the 12th century, although current research tends to favor a date in the 12th century. The original purpose of the building has not been fully clarified either, but it is believed that it served as a church for the inhabitants of nearby settlements.

Archaeological excavations revealed that the rotunda was once surrounded by a cemetery, highlighting its significance as a religious center. A filled-in well discovered inside the structure is not connected to the original building and likely dates from a later period.

One of the most intriguing discoveries made during the excavations was a stone slab found within the interior of the rotunda. The inscription carved into it has not yet been completely deciphered, continuing to attract the interest of historians and archaeologists.

Today, the remains of the rotunda are preserved as an important historical and archaeological monument. Occasional religious services and devotional events are still held here, allowing visitors to experience the unique atmosphere of a site that has connected faith, history, and local heritage for centuries.
