Starý židovský cintorín v Košiciach

The oldest monument of Jewish culture in Košice is the Jewish cemetery on Tatranská Street. It served its purpose between 1844 and 1889, after which burials were carried out only at the Jewish cemetery on Rastislavova Street. It is the resting place of many prominent figures of Košice, including Herman Horowitz – a well-known merchant of Tokaj wine and father of the famous painter Leopold Horowitz. Thanks to an imperial exception, his wife and Leopold’s mother, Mária Grün, was also buried here in 1904, even though the cemetery had already been officially closed.

Unfortunately, this sacred site has repeatedly fallen victim to vandalism and was also affected by surrounding construction during the 1970s. What was once a cemetery located on the outskirts of the city, in accordance with regulations, is today tightly enclosed by a dense residential area.
