Košická Kalvária
Košice Calvary was in the past one of the largest pilgrimage centers in eastern Slovakia. It belongs to a rare type of pilgrimage sites that were not founded as a result of a reported apparition or healing. Instead, it was intentionally established by its founders with the aim of organizing pilgrimages. The initiative came from the Jesuits of Košice in 1736. The church was built shortly afterward and completed in 1758 according to the design of Nikodém Lukáš Litzský.
The church is the architectural dominant of the Calvary complex and consists of two vertically arranged spaces – a lower and an upper church. The upper section is accessed by the Holy Stairs, containing relics in the center, modeled after the Roman Sancta Scala. The church is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows, whose statue is placed on the main late-Baroque baldachin altar from 1748.
A path lined with chapels of the Stations of the Cross leads to the church. These chapels are unique in that they also serve as burial crypts of Košice families. They are built in the Rococo style and feature rich interior decoration with life-sized polychrome sculptural groups depicting scenes such as Ecce Homo, Christ on the Mount of Olives, the Flagellation, and the Crowning with Thorns.
Pilgrimages were traditionally held in May and September, attracting large crowds from various regions including Abov, Šariš, Spiš, and Zemplín. Numerous processions of pilgrims arrived on foot from surrounding villages. A large procession of Košice citizens gathered in front of St. Elisabeth Cathedral before heading to Calvary.
A special devotion included Passion meditations, culminating in a symbolic ascent on the knees up the Holy Stairs to the upper church and the altar of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary. In the past, the site also featured a healing spring known as Peter’s Well. Generations of Košice residents cared for the chapels and the church, contributing to their restoration and artistic enrichment, making this a historically significant and still living sacred place.
Today, the entire complex is surrounded by modern buildings and mature lime trees.
