Kostol sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej v Kluknave

The Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria in Kluknava is an important sacral monument of the Spiš region. Its origins date back to 1555, when it was built in the Renaissance style thanks to Ľudovít Berthóty. It originally served as a Lutheran church and featured a separate wooden bell tower, which was a common solution during the Reformation period.

A major change occurred in 1710, when the church came under the Roman Catholic Church. It was significantly rebuilt in the Baroque style. Cardinal Imrich Čáky ordered the enlargement of the presbytery and the construction of a new tower, which was unusually attached to the side of the nave due to limited space.

The church contains valuable historical elements, including bells from 1599 and 1645, which are among its oldest preserved features. In 1809, the nave was expanded and the church received its current dedication to St. Catherine of Alexandria.

In 1940, the building underwent major renovation work to preserve its structure. The most recent reconstruction took place between 2012 and 2013, when the interior was modernized and new mosaics were added.

Today, the church is accessible only by prior arrangement to ensure its protection and a more personalized visit.
