Marianna café
The renovated burgher house from the 17th century once served as a town bastion and between 1650 and 1681 was home to brothers Andrej and Silvester Joanelli, who significantly contributed to the development of Smolník. Today, the building houses a café, a souvenir shop, accommodation for up to 12 guests, and a private museum dedicated to the mining history of the region. Guests can make use of parking in a secure courtyard and bicycle storage facilities.
Room layout: 1×4-bed room, 1×(2+2)-bed room, 1×(2+1)-bed room, and 1×2-bed room. Communication is available in German, Hungarian, Russian, and English.
Visitors are warmly welcomed by the owners, who gladly provide information about the history of Smolník and offer guided tours of the exhibitions “Known – Unknown Smolník” and “Mining and History of Smolník”, located in the historic underground spaces of the building.
Nestled in the picturesque region of the Slovak Ore Mountains and Volovské Hills, where pristine nature and tranquility still prevail, lies the historic royal mining town of Smolník, situated along the Gothic Route and the Iron Route. Once famous for its rich mining tradition, Smolník also gained recognition through its cigar factory, established in 1872 as the only cigar manufactory in Slovakia. Another local attraction is the Educational Mining Trail, which introduces visitors to the area’s mining heritage.
The area is also ideal for hiking, cycling, relaxation, and nature exploration. The famous red-marked hiking trail Cesta hrdinov SNP (Route of the Slovak National Uprising) passes through the village, connecting the Slovak Ore Mountains and Volovské Hills. Nearby, a yellow hiking trail leads visitors to several remarkable locations, including the spectacular Zádiel Valley, known for its record-breaking canyon listed in the Guinness World Records. Cyclists can reach many of these attractions via the green cycling route.
History enthusiasts can visit the famous Krásna Hôrka Castle, located 19 km away, the Betliar Manor House and Mausoleum, or the town of Rožňava. In the opposite direction, visitors may discover Markušovce Manor House and the majestic Spiš Castle, the largest castle ruin in Europe.
Close to Smolník are also the therapeutic Štós Spa, as well as the accessible Krásnohorská Cave and Jasov Cave.
During the summer months, the nearby Smolnícky Tajch, an artificial reservoir dating from 1768 and located only 5 km away, offers opportunities for swimming, relaxation, and fishing.
