Pamätník obetiam holokaustu v Košiciach
On today’s Idanská Street in Košice, there used to be an industrial brickworks which in 1944 became one of the main assembly sites for the Jewish population of the city and surrounding area before their deportation to Nazi concentration camps. More than 10,000 Jews were gathered here and spent their final days before being transported, with most of them later deported to Auschwitz and other extermination camps.
Today, this site is regarded as one of the most important Holocaust memorial locations in Košice and serves as a reminder of the tragic events of the Second World War, when Jewish residents were systematically stripped of their homes, property, and basic human rights. The brickworks functioned at that time as a temporary internment site where people were held in harsh and inhumane conditions before deportation.
In 2019, a simple brick memorial was unveiled on this site. It symbolically references the former brickworks and at the same time the individual lives of those deported. Each brick represents one forcibly taken human life, creating a strong visual and emotional reminder of the Holocaust.
The memorial also includes inscriptions in Slovak, Hungarian, English, and Hebrew, emphasizing the universal nature of remembrance.
